三毛 本名陈平，一九四三年三月二十六日生，浙江省定海县人，中国文化大学哲学系。肄业曾留学欧洲，婚后定居西属撒哈拉沙漠迦纳利岛，并以当地的生活为背景，写出一连串脍炙人口的作品。一九八一年回台后，曾在文化大学任教，一九八四年辞去教职，而以写作、演讲为重心。一九九一年一月四日去世，享年四十八岁。
她的足迹遍及世界各地，她的作品也在全球的华人社会广为流传，在大陆也有广大的读者，生平着作和译作十分丰富。共有二十四种。
三毛英文名叫ECHO，三毛本是笔名，从三毛的《闹学记》序中只提及“三毛”二字中暗藏一个易经的卦。但又是什么玄机，就不得而知了。但三毛本人又曾说过：起初起此名，是因为这个名字很不起眼，另有一个原因就是说自己写的东西很一般，只值三毛钱。
三毛于1943年3月26日（农历2月21日）生于四川重庆。幼年时期的三毛就表现对书本的爱好，5岁半时就在看《红楼梦》。初中时期几乎看遍了市面上的世界名着。初二那年休学，由父母亲悉心教导，在诗词古文、英文方面，打下次坚实的基础。并先后跟随顾福生、邵幼轩两位画家习画。

1991年1月4日清晨7时，当台湾某医院的清洁女工轻轻推开一间单人病房的门时，一副可怕的情景出现在她眼前——
在坐厕旁的点滴架的吊钩上，悬挂着三毛的身体，身着白底红花睡衣……
一个精灵，一个用自己亲身经历幻化出的语言影响着台湾和大陆不止一代人的传奇女作家——三毛离开了人世。
台湾警方的结论是：“因病厌世”。
关于三毛的死，人们议论纷纷：有人说，三毛长期为疾病所折磨，再也不堪忍受疾病的痛苦；有人说，三毛一生为情所困，这一次也是死在一个“情”字上；有人说，三毛受《红楼梦》的影响太深，她认为生就是死，死就是生；有人说，三毛的死与《滚滚红尘》有关；有人说三毛之死是去赴荷西之约；有人说，三毛死于江郎才尽，写不出好作品；有人说三毛之死与政治压力有关；……
但这些看似成理的说法，却都经不住仔细的推敲。
如绝症无望说，其实三毛于1月2日经过手术诊断，确认不是癌症，而是一般的妇科疾病。医生说，这种病通常都能治好，问题不是很大，排除了压在三毛心头的一块大石头。三毛身体确实不好，而且有多种疾病，但绝非外界盛传：她染上了绝症。
有人把三毛的死因归结于她所写的电影剧本《滚滚红尘》没获得最佳剧本奖。其实，三毛对她会不会得奖“看得很淡”。自己的作品被别人曲解和别有用心的人的攻击，除了不平和愤怒之外，还有些“伤心难禁”，但她根本就没有把这件事放在心上，说三毛死于《滚滚红尘》，乃无稽之谈！
在三毛的感情世界中，从来都主张智慧、勇敢和道德。她和荷西从恋爱到结婚到婚后，没有缠绵的色彩，没有柔和的小夜曲，有的只是真切和坦率。纵观三毛的感情生活，是曲折坎坷、跌宕起伏，而不是寻寻觅觅、凄凄惨惨，更不用说为“情”所困了！
古继堂先生在他的《评说三毛》中，关于三毛的死则更直接地说：其一，如果三毛真的决心要死，为什么还要到医院治病呢？其二，三毛死的环境缺乏自缢气氛。一般有准备去死的人，要先设计和创造死的环境，比如紧闭的门窗，除去自己不喜欢的东西，偷偷留下遗嘱等，三毛是个十分精细的女人，这些她都应该想到。其三，三毛死的方式不足以毙命。输液架只有1.6米，与死者一样高，还要架上长筒丝袜栓了脖子和铁钩拉直后的多余长度，三毛的尸体怎么可能“半悬在马桶上方”？其四，三毛曾信誓旦旦地宣布：“有责任的人是没有死亡的权利的。”
三毛没有自杀的计划，她已经安排好新一年的工作，她给贾平凹写了至情至诚的信，她在一篇文章中一再地说：“生命是美丽的……”
