三毛 本名陳平，一九四三年三月二十六日生，浙江省定海縣人，中國文化大學哲學系。肄業曾留學歐洲，婚後定居西屬撒哈拉沙漠迦納利島，並以當地的生活為背景，寫出一連串膾炙人口的作品。一九八一年回台後，曾在文化大學任教，一九八四年辭去教職，而以寫作、演講為重心。一九九一年一月四日去世，享年四十八歲。
她的足跡遍及世界各地，她的作品也在全球的華人社會廣為流傳，在大陸也有廣大的讀者，生平著作和譯作十分豐富。共有二十四種。
三毛英文名叫ECHO，三毛本是筆名，從三毛的《鬧學記》序中只提及「三毛」二字中暗藏一個易經的卦。但又是什麼玄機，就不得而知了。但三毛本人又曾說過：起初起此名，是因為這個名字很不起眼，另有一個原因就是說自己寫的東西很一般，只值三毛錢。
三毛於1943年3月26日（農歷2月21日）生於四川重慶。幼年時期的三毛就表現對書本的愛好，5歲半時就在看《紅樓夢》。初中時期幾乎看遍了市面上的世界名著。初二那年休學，由父母親悉心教導，在詩詞古文、英文方面，打下次堅實的基礎。並先後跟隨顧福生、邵幼軒兩位畫家習畫。
1964年，得到文化大學創辦人張其均先生的特許，到該校哲學系當旁聽生，課業成績優異。
1967年再次休學，隻身遠赴西班牙。在三年之間，前後就讀西班牙馬德里大學、德國哥德書院，在美國伊諾大學法學圖書館工作。對她的人生經驗和語文進修上有很大助益。
1970年回國，受張其均先生之邀聘在文大德文系、哲學系任教。後因未婚夫猝逝，她在哀痛之餘，再次離開，又到西班牙。與苦戀她6年的荷西重逢。

三毛神秘死亡：多年未破的謀殺案
1991年1月4日清晨7時，當台灣某醫院的清潔女工輕輕推開一間單人病房的門時，一副可怕的情景出現在她眼前——
在坐廁旁的點滴架的吊鉤上，懸掛著三毛的身體，身著白底紅花睡衣……
一個精靈，一個用自己親身經歷幻化出的語言影響著台灣和大陸不止一代人的傳奇女作家——三毛離開了人世。
台灣警方的結論是：「因病厭世」。
關於三毛的死，人們議論紛紛：有人說，三毛長期為疾病所折磨，再也不堪忍受疾病的痛苦；有人說，三毛一生為情所困，這一次也是死在一個「情」字上；有人說，三毛受《紅樓夢》的影響太深，她認為生就是死，死就是生；有人說，三毛的死與《滾滾紅塵》有關；有人說三毛之死是去赴荷西之約；有人說，三毛死於江郎才盡，寫不出好作品；有人說三毛之死與政治壓力有關；……
但這些看似成理的說法，卻都經不住仔細的推敲。
如絕症無望說，其實三毛於1月2日經過手術診斷，確認不是癌症，而是一般的婦科疾病。醫生說，這種病通常都能治好，問題不是很大，排除了壓在三毛心頭的一塊大石頭。三毛身體確實不好，而且有多種疾病，但絕非外界盛傳：她染上了絕症。
有人把三毛的死因歸結於她所寫的電影劇本《滾滾紅塵》沒獲得最佳劇本獎。其實，三毛對她會不會得獎「看得很淡」。自己的作品被別人曲解和別有用心的人的攻擊，除了不平和憤怒之外，還有些「傷心難禁」，但她根本就沒有把這件事放在心上，說三毛死於《滾滾紅塵》，乃無稽之談！
在三毛的感情世界中，從來都主張智慧、勇敢和道德。她和荷西從戀愛到結婚到婚後，沒有纏綿的色彩，沒有柔和的小夜曲，有的只是真切和坦率。縱觀三毛的感情生活，是曲折坎坷、跌宕起伏，而不是尋尋覓覓、凄凄慘慘，更不用說為「情」所困了！
古繼堂先生在他的《評說三毛》中，關於三毛的死則更直接地說：其一，如果三毛真的決心要死，為什麼還要到醫院治病呢？其二，三毛死的環境缺乏自縊氣氛。一般有準備去死的人，要先設計和創造死的環境，比如緊閉的門窗，除去自己不喜歡的東西，偷偷留下遺囑等，三毛是個十分精細的女人，這些她都應該想到。其三，三毛死的方式不足以斃命。輸液架只有1.6米，與死者一樣高，還要架上長筒絲襪栓了脖子和鐵鉤拉直後的多餘長度，三毛的屍體怎麼可能「半懸在馬桶上方」？其四，三毛曾信誓旦旦地宣布：「有責任的人是沒有死亡的權利的。」
三毛沒有自殺的計劃，她已經安排好新一年的工作，她給賈平凹寫了至情至誠的信，她在一篇文章中一再地說：「生命是美麗的……」
